Statement on Homelessness

I care deeply about every corner of this city, and I know we need to do a better job of finding city-wide solutions to the city-wide crisis of homelessness.

The homelessness crisis is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, making it difficult for service providers and policy makers to keep pace. No Mayor or City Council is going to solve this alone. We need to work with other orders of government, community partners and residents. I don’t have all of the answers, but if we work together - all of us - I know we can find a better way forward.

That is why I am calling for a Task Force on Homelessness to get advice and feedback from experts and residents, including those with lived experience. In order to curb homelessness, improve safety for all and ensure a roof over everyone’s head, residents must be at the table. My vision is to have experts and residents sharing and learning from each other, to help inform a comprehensive city-wide plan.

Focused on measurable outcomes and public accountability, I want the task force to signal a new direction by problem-solving with the community. I know some will say this should have been done long ago. I understand those criticisms, and I am committed to getting it right.

I am asking our community to work with me to make sure that we all have a voice on the front lines of the fight for safety and wellbeing for everyone that calls Saskatoon home.
Together - all of us.

Sincerely,

Cynthia

As I run for mayor, I want to recognize that we are on Treaty 6 Territory, the traditional land of the Cree, Saulteaux, Dene, Dakota, Lakota, Nakota, and the Métis Nation.

Living and working here is a privilege, and I acknowledge the deep history and contributions of the Indigenous peoples who have cared for this land long before it became Saskatoon.

In my campaign and beyond, I’m committed to respecting our shared history and working together to build a city where everyone’s voice matters.
