Sustainable City: A Liveable Walkable Saskatoon
As Saskatoon sees unprecedented growth in population, it’s more important than ever to seek sustainable solutions to ensure a good quality of life for residents today, and into the future.
Mayoral candidate Cynthia Block announced her vision for a sustainable city. This future-oriented strategy focuses on optimizing Saskatoon’s existing infrastructure, protecting and expanding green spaces, and enhancing safe urban mobility options.
"By focusing density downtown and near the new public transportation system, Bus Rapid Transit (LINK), we will improve efficiency, save money and make Saskatoon more sustainable,” Block said. “Working with our community, we will continue to build neighbourhood corridor plans near LINK stations, to improve accessibility and add green space.”
Block is a strong supporter of a liveable, walkable, accessible city and wants to see expansion of the active transportation plan, more multi-use pathways and increased accessibility throughout the city.
Her plan will move toward the future of clean energy by expanding solar farms, converting the city fleet to zero emissions; expanding the Home Energy Loan Program to include small businesses - reducing emissions and energy costs. Block supports investments to Meewasin, natural landscapes, smart irrigation practices, and our urban forest. She will also make our centre medians greener by integrating native species to improve biodiversity and reduce watering costs.
“Together, we can build a more sustainable, efficient, and affordable city. Let's move forward with practical solutions that protect our environment and improve quality of life, while reducing costs for residents and businesses,” Block said.
“Cynthia has always had a vision for Saskatoon as a modern, progressive, desirable city. She understands that cities should be developed for people first,” said Alan Wallace, former Director of Urban Planning, City of Saskatoon. “Saskatoon requires an experienced mayor who has a big picture view and the knowledge to get things done. I believe Cynthia has those qualities. She is a leader - she listens, she learns, and she sees all points of view. But above all, she acts.”
